The 1989 vintage—a good, often underrated year—still belongs to the "old" era of the winery, prior to significant vineyard and cellar updates. However, this period also marks a time of transformation in Bordeaux. In the 1990s, wineries across the region began implementing decisive quality-improvement measures, such as reducing yields, using advanced cellar technology (e.g., concentrators and computer-controlled temperature systems), selective planting, and careful harvesting. In this sense, the '89 vintage represents the last of the truly "authentic," traditional Bordeaux wines, particularly from châteaux that had not yet joined the ranks of top-tier producers and only started modernization later.
